Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are the exact requirements for a US passport photo?

US passport photo no larger than 2x2in (51x51mm). Your head length (from chin to crown) should be 1 to 1⅜ inch (25–35 mm). The background should be plain white or off-white and should show no shadows or or designs. Face must be middle of the photo, full-face must be printed forward, be a neutral expression or a natural smile, both eyes must be opened, no sunglasses, no hat (unless worn for religious reasons which does not cover facial features). Photos must be new (taken within the last 6 months), color, high resolution (not blurry) and intended as digital submissions (need to meet JPEG file specifications). Our service will automatically crop, enhance background, and ensure that your photo meets official State Department guidelines.

2. Can I wear glasses, hats, or head coverings?

  • Glasses: Volumes of US guidelines will not allow glasses in photos. Take off the glasses before shooting.
  • Hats/Headgear: No hats or other headgear may be worn inside the school building, except to be worn for religious reasons every day. Even then, the covering can’t cast shadows or obscure any part of the face — from the chin to the forehead. Just your face, and make sure I can see as much of it as possible.
  • Tip: For religious head coverings, place the lighting in such a way that you won’t have shadows on your face. Our system accounts for shadow or occlusion while checking compliance.

3. What background color should I use?

For US passport photos, use a plain white or off-white background. No textures, patterns, or objects. The light of the background should be very even in order to avoid shadows. If you’re uploading a photo to be used in our service, it should be your own photo on a neutral background if at all possible; we’ll replace the background with solid white according to specs using our AI for neutral virtual photos.

4. How do I take a compliant photo at home?

  1. Pick a plain background: A blank white wall or a white sheet that does not leave wrinkles to cast shadows.
  2. Lighting: You can use diffused natural light or two lamps on both sides, reduce the shadow on your face and background. Refrain from direct light or sunlight.
  3. Camera position: Position your smartphone or camera at eye height, on a tripod or firm surface. Rear camera may result in better quality.
  4. Pose & Expression: Stand about ~4 feet from the wall, straight toward the camera, neutral whenever possible, mouth closed, eyes open. Keep shoulders relaxed.
  5. Distance & Position: From the shoulders to above the top of the head, with just enough dramatized space. We show framing guides in our upload interface.
  6. Upload & Process: Make use of our “Upload Photo” tool; AI crops, removes background & checks face features. If problems begin to show up, re-take after on-screen coaching.

5. What file format and size are accepted?

We accept JPEG (. jpg) or PNG (. png) images to a moderate level (e.g., less than 10 MB). Final artwork is high resolution JPEG at actual size for digital submission. In general, the file size should be around 240 KB – 10 MB in case of most web forms; our service provide with prints within the acceptable range. Print templates set up at 300 dpi.

6. How fast is the processing?

  • Automatic Processing: Zero (just a few seconds) for cropping and background removal and AI checks.
  • Manual Review: If AI identifies an issue (such as lighting, framing, shadows), our trained reviewers respond within minutes and make adjustments or provide retake guidance. Across the board, turnaround time is still below 10 minutes in the vast majority of cases.

7. What if my photo is rejected by the agency or embassy?

We provide with a more guarantee: If you submitted an application online and the government reject it because of our photo, we will refund the charge of the 3rd image, however we will not be able to refund the additional paid of the 1st image. In order to get this, the proof of rejection is required stating photo reasons. “Next, we handle it and fix it as needed.

8. Can I use the digital file for online visa applications?

Yes. For the supported countries, our JPEG output satisfies the official digital submission rules. Choose the right country in the workflow so that the system will render the specs for that country (dimensions, background color, head size etc). Please always check the detailed embassy portal requirements – our output complies with standard specs.

9. How do I print the photo correctly at home?

After you receive the print-ready template (i.e. 4-up 2×2″ images on a 4×6” sheet) Download a pack of photo-quality paper and set you printer to 300 DPI without scaling. Print at 100% size. Trim along guide lines precisely. Our template includes cut marks. And if you want to print professionally, you can download the file and take it to a photo lab.

10. Can I retake and re-upload if I’m not satisfied?

Yes. And if the first shot isn’t up to par or you want another stab at it, reshoot after taking tips from the screen and upload again. Retakes within 24 hours, discounted at (e.g., 50% off), can be purchased for Basic package. Subscription packages allow 1 – multiple uploads under the terms of the package.

11. Are children’s passport photo requirements different?

Yes, there are exceptions to the guidelines: babies need to face forward with a natural or neutral expression (smiling but just barely), eyes open, without shadows. In newborns, some guidelines may permit neutral or closed mouth. Our offering has special framing guides on head size for children and is AI/manual checked for this. Use a workflow and select “Child” to apply the correct specs.

12. What about applicants with disabilities or special needs?

We support the compliant photo processing of applicants with anything medically required on their head and/or face as long as it does not cover the facial features that we need in your passport photo. Hearing aids, for example, are typically acceptable. If something on your accessory gets in the way, report that during the upload and they can take that into account when doing the manual check. Complete the entire face for religious head gear. Our reviewers are instructed to allow valid variations as per official guidance.

13. How secure is my photo data?

All uploads and communication with the service is carried over encrypted (HTTPS) connections. Picture are preserved temporarily on a secure server space and will be automatically deleted after a certain holding period (as for example 30 days), unless you decide for a longer storage. We don’t pass on pictures to others. Find more information in our privacy policy.
